This presentation will offer an exploratory visual journey of the kaleidoscope that is African creativity. There is a deliberate slant towards the transformative potential of design in myriad sectors - from enhancing attainable lifestyles to securing sustainable livelihoods, as viewed through the eyes of a denizen of this continent...
“I am an industrial designer, educator and researcher at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). I studied in Kenya, the USA, India and South Africa and hold postgraduate qualifications in Industrial Design, Higher Education, and Universal Design. I have taught in Kenya, Botswana and South Africa and I'm passionate about various expressions of socially conscious design, including Participatory Design; Universal Design; and Design for Sustainability. I have a special interest in the pivotal role of design in advancing the developmental agenda on the African continent. I am associated with a number of international networks focusing on design within industrially developing (or majority world) contexts. I am also the President-Elect of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) and much of my work focuses on the importance of Icsid in supporting the aspirations of younger designers.“
