Co-Founder & CEO: CodeX
"Getting your Social Venture off the Ground: What it Takes to "Just Do It"
“Launching a startup isn't easy, especially a social venture in Africa. It is literally a neverending set of challenges, but it is also one of the most gratifying experiences one can ever have in life. We'll walk through some of the steps every entrepreneur needs to take to get a startup off the ground. I’ll share my experiences and some of the lessons I’ve learned during the first year of codeX, and chat about some of the ways students can take the next step to launch the project they are most passionate about.”
“I’m the Co-Founder & CEO of codeX, which is growing the next generation of African coders. Developers with strong product focus and problem solving skills are what Africa needs, and they are in desperately short supply. We at codeX find the best raw talent and train them by doing real projects right from the start. Developers arrive on the job knowing exactly what it takes to build a career in tech. I’ve been lucky enough to be obsessed with my twin passions, technology and Africa, on TV. As a veteran journalist and executive producer, I made hundreds of stories, shows, and series on technology and innovation. I’ve also traveled around the continent telling stories of the entrepreneurs, investors, and companies building Africa’s digital future for Bloomberg TV Africa. I have a deep and longstanding passion for economic development in Africa, and believe arming people with the tools to build creative products and companies is the key to its future.”
Why do you want to be part of UCT Upstarts?
“UCT is a hotbed of creative potential. I’m excited to lend my insights and experiences to help more young people put their ideas into action.”
HOW DO YOU ‘IMAGINE A NEW AFRICA’?
“A new Africa is one where a single African has the opportunity - and the tools - to realize their own creative potential.”
